Charlie Robison was born on September 1, 1964 (age 59) in Houston, Texas, United States and died on September 10, 2023.

Charles Fitzgerald Robison was an American country music singer-songwriter. His brother, Bruce Robison, and his sister, Robyn Ludwick, are also singer-songwriters.

After a knee injury stopped Charlie Robison’s football career at Southwest Texas State University, he moved to Austin, Texas, and played in the bands Chaparral, Millionaire Playboys, and Two Hoots and a Holler.

In 1996, he released the record “Bandera” as a solo artist. After that, he signed with Sony, and “Life of the Party” came out on Sony’s Lucky Dog Records.

He had three of his biggest hits from this record, including “My Hometown.” The next thing he put out was a live CD called “Unleashed Live,” which was made by him, his brother Bruce, and Jack Ingram. He then made “Step Right Up” and another live record for Columbia Records.

During the first season of the TV singing competition Nashville Star in 2003, Robison was one of the judges.

Unhappy with the standards and limits of being a Nashville country singer, he went to a smaller independent label, Dualtone, for “Good Times” in 2004. This was followed by a lot of traveling and more control over his business. So, his music started to sound less like mainstream/Nashville country and more like the South and hard rock.

Five years after Good Times came out, Robison put out Beautiful Day on Dualtone on June 23, 2009.

This was the first CD that he made on his own. Keith Gattis, a singer-songwriter from Nashville, wrote a number of the songs on both records.

In the third episode of the first season of HBO’s original show True Blood, the song “Good Times” was used in the credits.

In 2009, he went on an East Coast tour to support “Beautiful Day.” The trip took him to Little Rock, Nashville, Atlanta, Raleigh, New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, Iowa City, and Memphis. Since then, he has mostly played in Texas, but he has also played in Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado on occasion.

During his live shows, Robison was known for covering old rock songs. Some of these are “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC, “Call Me the Breeze” by JJ Cale, “Rocket Man” by Elton John, and several songs by the Rolling Stones, like “Dead Flowers” and “Honky Tonk Women.” He also played a number of Willie Nelson songs, like “Whisky River” and “Stay all Night.”

Mark Tokach played lead guitar in his live band. Abe Combest played drums, Zeke Benenate played bass, J.C. Burt played steel guitar, and Chris Valdez was the road manager and played more guitar. Before Beautiful Day, his band was called The Enablers. Keith Robinson played the drums, Scott Esbeck played the bass, and Travis Woodard played the drums.

Kim Deschamps played pedal and lap steel, mandolin, and guitar from 2000 to 2009; Kevin Carroll played guitar; Chris Grady played bass; Louis Landry played piano and accordion; and Kris Brown played bass.

Lloyd Maines (who produced “Step Right Up” and “Good Times”), Rich Brotherton, Charlie Sexton, and Natalie Maines (duet on “The Wedding Song” and chorus singing on “El Cerrito Place”) have also appeared on his records as special guests.

Robison and former Major League Baseball player Brooks Kieschnick opened Alamo Icehouse in San Antonio, Texas, in September 2014.

On September 24, 2018, Robison said that he would no longer be able to sing because of problems from surgery. He also said that he was retired from the stage and studio.

In 2022, Robison went back to making songs. As part of his first tour since 2018, he went back to Billy Bob’s and played at the same place where he played for the first time in 1997.
